Streamlining Your Morning Routine

Streamline your Morning Routine
By R.L. Fielding

Getting up and out the door in the morning in one piece can be a daunting task for many of us. Bottom line? We’re tired! Recent studies show that about 40 percent of American adults get less than seven hours of sleep on weekdays and that the average work week is now 54 hours long. Not only are we tired – we are busier than ever at work and at home.

Simplifying our hectic mornings is something nearly all of us wish we could do well. Before heading out the door, whether we grab a granola bar or brew a single cup of using Senseo pods – good preparation is the key to ensuring your morning routine can, in fact, be pleasant! So, the next time your alarm clock wails, instead of fumbling around to get ready and out the door, keep the following tips in mind to help streamline your morning routine:

Start the Night Before

First of all, get organized and try to plan things out the night before. Take some time over a weekend to sort through your closet and try to section your work clothes off from your everyday clothes. This will make it easier to choose an outfit in the morning. Taking it a step further might involve choosing an outfit to wear the day before, ironing it if needed and setting it aside.

If you have children, you may also want to lay out their outfits for the next day on a table or dresser in their room and if they’re big enough, teach them to dress themselves with the outfits you’ve chosen the night before. Again, if they are old enough, you’ll want them to get in the habit of grooming themselves, to save you the time, before they head out the door. Tell your children that after they are finished getting ready, they are allowed to watch one television program before heading off to school.

Making lunches for yourself and/or your children the day before also can ease the congestion of your morning routine. Try to teach your children that it’s their responsibility to get their lunch in the refrigerator each morning to take with them.

Don’t Forget Breakfast!

With the hustle and bustle of weekday mornings, it is easy to just skip breakfast altogether in order to save time. However, recent studies concluded that people who skip breakfast, tended to eat about 100 calories more over the course of the day than those who did eat breakfast. Studies also found that the negative effects of skipping breakfast may also include an increased risk of heart disease.

While making eggs and bacon every morning may sound delicious, it also may take you more time than you have to prepare it, not to mention that it can be very high in calories. So, on the

weekends, stock up on healthy and quick breakfast foods. Consider buying healthy breakfast bars for your family or even fresh fruit that you can cut up and place in Tupperware for easy and quick access during the week.

For those lovers out there, consider investing in a single cup maker. These brewers produce a hot, fresh cup of in under a minute, with minimal cleanup. They also cut down on wasting by making just the right amount for one person.

Cut Out Morning Stops

Studies have shown that the average commute of those not working at home is about 30 minutes. There are a few simple ways in which you can avoid tagging on extra commuting time in the morning.

Cut out morning stops to the store to pick up your and the newspaper. Instead, brew your own at home, as mentioned before. Also, consider having your morning newspaper delivered to your doorstep each morning or even read it online as soon as you arrive to work. In addition, make sure you fill up your gas tank either after work or on the weekends.

While everyone has their own, unique morning rituals, there are always things we can do to help ease the chaos. Either by brewing your own or bagging your own lunch the night before, careful planning and preparation can help to ensure that you start your day off on the right track.
